Lough Carra
THE LIMESTONE PEARL - OUR HOMEWATER
Brownstown Lodge is situated on the beautiful and remote shores of Lough Carra, one of Irelands most known destinations for wild brown trout fishing in crystal clear water.
The trout season starts on the 01 March and ends the 30th of September while pike fishing can be done throughout the year. The lough fishes particularly well in summer time while lough Corrib and Mask have become quite. Lough Carra is also well known for its dry fly fishing in the late afternoon and the hours before sunset. Moreover, the lough contains a good stock of Pike and Perch.
Brownstown Lodge can provide its guests a boat with engine as well as the fly fishing rods and reels required for any type of fishing in County Mayo. Also Guiding is available by request.
Lough Mask
Fisherman´s Rocky Heaven
Lough Mask is a 20,500 acres rocky, limestone lake in County Galway and Mayo, Ireland, north of Lough Corrib. It is the country´s sixth largest lake in the country and very famous for its trout & pike fishing. The World Cup Trout Fly Fishing Championship takes place annually. Lough Mask can be both challenging and dangerous due to its shallow waters that appear fast from deep water with jagged rocks. However, the trout are stunning and fly fishing is the most common technique, When chasing Ferox Trout trolling is the way to go. From Brownstown Lodge to Lough Mask it is a 10 minutes drive by car and boats on the famous lakes can be rented out during the fishing season easily. If you plan to catch a Ferox trout we strongly recommend to go trolling on the west side of the lake at it is more deeper than the east side of the lake. For fly fishing, any bay in the reeds might provide you with the fish of a lifetime. Try fly fishing for pike on those bays as well - although trolling for pike is most probably the most effective way of catching good numbers, we however, have caught the biggest pikes on pretty large flies.
Lough Corrib
Salmon, Trout & Pike - The Fisherman´s Multitalent
Lough Corrib is 42,000 acres in size and contains Salmon, Trout and Pike. The Lough is renowned for its wild brown trout and salmon fishing. Brown trout fishing is normally good from the first day of the season while the salmon fishing for grilse is best from around the end of May. Trout can be caught on fly from opening day, Feb. 15th. Each year, a number of specimen brown trout are caught on the lough, and the record stands at around 21.5lb, caught in September 2002. Boats can easily be rented out during the fishing season on various locations on whatever part of the lake you prefer. We had lovely fishing days in the area of Cross, Cong. However, due to the size of the lake we strongly recommend a guide at least for the first day as he or she will show you the best spots and bring you to the fish. Lough Corrib can be reached by car in around 15 - 20 minutes from Brownstown Lodge. Fishing is free of charge, for the salmon however, you require the state license.
River Moy
One of Europe´s most prolific Salmon Rivers
Ireland holds a number of super river systems and of these, the Moy that straddles the counties Mayo and Sligo, is one of the most productive ones. It is around one hundred kilometers long and with its extensive tributaries, it drains a catchment of over two thousand square kilometers. The system includes great loughs such as Conn and Cullin but also many smaller lakes and streams. We personally love to fish East Mayo and whenever the conditions are suitable, we often had success - however, it is called salmon fishing not salmon catching ;-) The Moy flows through pastureland hut the mountains of the watersheds while the Nephin Beg range lines the western horizon and the Ox mountains marks the eastern watershed.
The Moy has long been known as Ireland's premier Salmon river and it offers a wide variety of quality angling to suit all tastes and budgets. It provide excellent spring Salmon and grilse fishingwith both fly and bait. Sea trout are also abundant in the Moy system. Fishing starts the 1 February while the time from April - September is the most promising one. East mayo holds a 2,5 mile designated FLY ONLY stretch - this is our favorite peace of water in the whole system. The Price is 35 Euros per day and therefore pretty much affordable compared to other salmon rivers in Scotland or Iceland.
